Gingerbread Men
Ingredients
350g = 12oz of plain white flour
5ml = 1tsp of bicarbonate of soda
10mls = 2tsp of ground ginger
100g = 4oz of butter or margarine
175g = 6oz of light soft brown sugar
60mls = 4 tbsp of golden syrup
1 beaten egg
currants for decoration
Method
1: Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger into a bowl.
2: Rub in the butter or margarine until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs.
3: Stir in the sugar.
4:Beat the syrup into the egg.
5: stir the mixture together
6: Mix to form a dough and then knead it until smooth.
7:Divide into two equal sizes
and roll out each piece on a lightly floured surface to about 5mm = 1/4 inch thick.
8: Using cutters cut out gingerbread figures and put them on a lightly greased baking sheet.
9: Decorate with the currants to make eyes,
mouth, etc
10: Bake at 190c = 375f of gas mark 5 for 12-15 minutes or until golden
11: cool on the tray for a few minutes and then transfer to a wire cooling rack
12: Enjoy eating them.
Hard/Easy
The hardest part of this recipe I found was getting the mixture to the right
consistency to form the dough. Once the dough has been rolled out the kids can carry on by themselves to do the cutting out and
decorating. Obviously don't let them touch the oven.
